the kids don’t stand a chance (rewrite)

the following is a song i just wrote from the basic tune of ‘kids don’t stand a chance’ by vampire weekend.

driving through the red lights
all the way to france
the long island expressway
the cars just seem to dance
the kind of lies you tell me
the things you didn’t say
all wrapped up in sunshine
on a rainy day

the minutes that you hold me
the hours that i wait
since you found a way to speak
you don’t have much to say
spinning lights and bedrooms
in and out of luck
the boys don’t take direction
they know which way is up

shiny, shiny presents
the duchess and the fool
came here looking for you
i said i had no clue
you said there was no meaning
you said there is no past
you said there is no point to this
the kids don’t stand a chance
the kids don’t stand a chance

you lost your mothers bracelet
in somebody’s pool
you kept your wits about you
but broke the golden rule
and all of dawn’s perfection
make it easier to track
the places that you’ve been to
there is no turning back

pretty, pretty people
they do an ugly dance
the things you thought they gave you
they’ll try and take it back
the mirror shows the surface
but the surface hides the facts
they’ve got us all surrounded
the kids don’t stand a chance
the kids don’t stand a chance

i am moving forward
but forward’s moving past
all of these distractions
they all go by so fast
the tears you sent by messenger
the grass stains on your pants
the promises they told you
when you were on your back

and now that it is over
it’s time that we pretend
we’re driving to an island
and hiding in the sand
and all those things they sold you
the storybook romance
happy ever after
the kids don’t stand a chance
the kids don’t stand a chance
